Hostelling @ Åland Islands
The Åland Islands are a real summer paradise. There are 3 HI-Hostels on the islands: Jurmo Vandrarhem, Godby Vandrarhem and Bomans Gästhem. Why not visit them all!
The Åland Islands consist of 6500 islands. A personal way to experience the Åland Islands is to set out for an ‘island hop’. This adventure trip is made easy by the good ferry connections between the islands, operating all year.
Travel around the islands with one of our packages combining hostelling with a rental vehicle:
DRIVE IN FINLAND
Hostelling and Rental Car Package
BIKE IN FINLAND
Hostelling and Rental Bike Package
People and bicycles are transported on the ferries free of charge; a charge is collected for motor vehicles. During the summer season it is recommended to make reservations in good time in advance.
Further information and tickets available at the office of Ålandstrafiken in Mariehamn or directly from the ferries’ personnel.
In addition to cycling, the Åland Islands are ideal for hiking, paddling, fishing and camp schools.
The most popular sights include the Kastelholm Castle, the museum ship Pommern and the Maritime Quarter located in the East Harbour where you have a chance to become familiar with the maritime history. Traditional delicious dishes of the Åland Islands include various fish dishes of the archipelago and black bread.
Hostel of the Year 2010 is Hostel Sofia in Tampere
The board of HI Finland gave several reasons for selecting Hostel Sofia. ”The board paid special attention to Hostel Sofia’s cooperation ability with HI Finland; the hostel has utilized the services provided by HI Finland in an active way and it has been proven to be a professionally run accommodation establishment”, says the Secretary General of HI Finland Ari J. Aalto.
When selecting the winner the board of HI Finland also paid attention to good customer feedback which gave the most praise to the cleanliness of the hostel and the friendliness of its staff. Hostel Sofia is easily accessible to customers, as the hostel can also be booked online in real-time.
Hostel Sofia operated formerly under the name of Hostel Tampereen NNKY and was open only in the summer. The hostel is still run by the NNKY, or Young Women's Christian Association, of Tampere, but after the complete renovation in 2007 the hostel changed its name and started year-round operation. Thanks to this the availability of hostel accommodation in Tampere was secured even though the traditional Hostel Uimahallin Maja closed its doors for the last time two years ago.
